Point of View Suites
★★★★The Only Oceanfront Address in a Fortress Town
Louisbourg's reputation runs almost entirely on one attraction, the reconstructed Fortress of Louisbourg, a National Historic Site built to recreate an eighteenth-century French garrison town. This hotel, formerly Point of View Suites and relaunched in 2022 as North Star, is the only oceanfront property in town, set on five acres with a private shingle beach looking out over the Atlantic. Television designers Colin and Justin bought and rebuilt it, and their overhaul was documented in a four-part series that aired on Channel 5 UK and CBC Gem, an unusual level of design attention for a Cape Breton harbour town this size.
Why It Works
We chose this hotel for the combination of genuine ocean frontage and a kitchen team taking the setting seriously: two restaurants, Coast for breakfast and brunch and The Bothy for dinner, build their menus around Atlantic seafood, lobster and halibut among them, down to a house dessert called the Louisbourg Grunt that nods to the region's steamed-pudding tradition. Ten of the suites keep compact kitchens, useful for a stay built around day trips to the Fortress rather than restaurant reservations every night.
Why This Location
The Fortress of Louisbourg is a short drive away, its costumed interpreters and reconstructed ramparts drawing most visitors to this stretch of Cape Breton Island in the first place. The hotel's own private beach means the day doesn't have to end when the historic site closes, and the town of Louisbourg itself, small and unhurried, sits close enough for an evening walk. Sydney, the island's largest town, and the Cabot Trail's eastern approaches are both under an hour by car.

A Beach Hotel Rebuilt on Camera
The rebrand from Point of View Suites to North Star was not a quiet repaint: Colin and Justin's renovation was filmed for a Warner Brothers International documentary series, and the pair still spend the May-to-October season on site rather than handing the property to a distant management company. That hands-on presence shows in details a typical seasonal hotel skips, from the restaurant concepts to the choice of a shingle beach over a manicured lawn.
Two Kitchens Worth Booking Around
Coast keeps mornings simple with breakfast, lunch and brunch service, while The Bothy takes over for dinner with an Atlantic seafood menu built around lobster and halibut, craft cocktails, and local Cape Breton beers. The Louisbourg Grunt, a steamed pudding dessert named for the town itself, is the kind of specific, regional detail that separates a destination restaurant from a hotel dining room serving whatever is easiest.
Before You Book
This is a seasonal property, open May through October, built for travellers making the trip out to the Fortress of Louisbourg rather than a year-round base. It rewards guests who want a real beach and a kitchen with a point of view over a chain hotel near the historic site's parking lot, and rooms with ocean views should be requested specifically, since not every unit faces the water.
