Hotel Quintessence ★★★★★
Every Room Here Has a Fireplace, and That Is the Point
Tremblant's pedestrian village is a well-made thing, and it is also loud. The Quintessence is not in it. The hotel sits below, on the shore of Lac Tremblant, in a building of gables and turrets that reads as a lakeside house rather than a resort block. Everything inside is a suite: nine categories, from seven hundred square feet up past a thousand, each with a fireplace, most with a balcony and a view down the lake. One category is not in the main house at all. Clagett's Cabin is a heritage building with a brick hearth, kept and let as it stands.
Why It Works
Ski hotels tend to sort into two kinds: slopeside boxes trading entirely on the lift queue, and country houses too far out to use. This one is neither. It is minutes from the village and the gondola but has the lake in front of it, which is what makes it work in July as well as in February. The all-suite format is the second reason: the smallest category here is larger than most hotels' best room, and a lit fireplace changes what an evening in a ski town looks like. The restaurant holds four diamonds, which settles dinner.
Why This Location
Chemin de la Chapelle runs along the water below the resort, which puts the hotel between two different holidays. Uphill is Tremblant: the gondola, the pedestrian village, the runs, the golf in summer. Straight ahead is Lac Tremblant, long and quiet in the way a mountain lake is quiet on a weekday morning. The village of Mont-Tremblant proper, with its own restaurants, lies further along the road. Montreal is roughly two hours south, which is why the place fills on Fridays and empties on Sundays, and why a midweek booking is worth more than it costs.

La Quintessence, and a Wine List Worth the Detour
The restaurant is why a good number of guests never leave the property for dinner. The cooking is Laurentian produce in a French register, and the wine list has been collecting awards long enough that the wine bar has become a destination of its own on the lake road. Four diamonds from CAA and AAA is the formal recognition. The informal one is that the dining room opens at seven in the morning, which in a ski town means breakfast before the first lift and a table waiting after the last run.
Sans Sabots, and a Pool That Runs Cold
The spa is called Sans Sabots, which is a joke about ski boots and also an instruction. Massages, treatments and yoga inside, a steam bath and a sauna, and outside two pools doing different jobs: an infinity pool that runs in summer, and a cold one held low for anyone who wants the Nordic circuit properly. After a day on the mountain, the sequence of hot, cold and a lit fireplace upstairs is the whole argument for staying below the village rather than in it.
