Hastings House Country House Hotel
We were drawn to Hastings House for what surrounds it: twenty two oceanfront acres above...
Qualicum Beach keeps one house from 1914 that nobody tears down: a grand private mansion built on Vancouver Island's Oceanside coast, host at various points to Bing Crosby, John Wayne and the King of Siam when the island's shoreline drew old Hollywood north for the fishing and the quiet. The mansion survived long enough to need saving, and whoever restored it kept the things that mattered — the wood panelling, the crystal chandeliers, the heritage fireplaces, the sweeping staircase that still anchors the entry hall. What stands today is Crown Mansion Boutique Hotel & Villas, eleven rooms and villas wrapped around that original architecture, with a dining room and a library doing the work a grand house like this was always meant to do.
We selected Crown Mansion for the rare thing it offers at this scale: real architectural pedigree, not a reproduction of one. Rare wood panelling and crystal chandeliers are expensive to fake and impossible to rush, and here they come attached to eleven rooms rather than two hundred, which keeps the house feeling inhabited rather than toured. The Sapphire Room's weekend-only service, led by Chef Michelle, gives the property a genuine culinary identity instead of a generic in-house restaurant, and the standalone clawfoot tubs and heated tile floors in several rooms are the kind of detail a traveller remembers.
Qualicum Beach sits on the Oceanside stretch of Vancouver Island, the gentler, golf-and-garden coast between Nanaimo and Comox, built around a long sand beach and a slower pace than the island's west side. Crown Mansion stands on Crescent Road East, within three kilometres of a golf course and close enough to the shoreline for an evening walk after dinner at the Sapphire Room. The setting suits a traveller who wants Vancouver Island without the ferry-line crowds of Victoria or Tofino: fishing, hiking and walking tours are all listed among the house's own amenities, steps from where guests sleep.

The eleven rooms and villas split across three configurations: one-bedroom condos with a king bed and a double sofa bed for families or longer stays, and standard and deluxe king rooms built into the original house. Several carry the signature touch that keeps coming up in guest accounts — a standalone clawfoot soaking tub and heated tile floors, with separate sitting rooms and two bathrooms in the largest configurations. The restored library is not a decorative afterthought: it is where the mansion's original domestic life is most visible, and where the house asks guests to sit down rather than pass through.
Dinner service runs Thursday through Saturday only, led by Chef Michelle, who is as much a fixture of the guest experience as the dining room itself. Running a four-night kitchen rather than seven lets a small house commit to a tasting-driven table instead of stretching a brigade thin, and it is the detail that separates Crown Mansion from a bed-and-breakfast trading on the same address. Guests planning a stay around the restaurant should book the Thursday-to-Saturday window specifically; the rest of the week, the house reverts to its quieter, library-and-fireplace register.
The Sapphire Room's limited nights mean a visit timed for Sunday through Wednesday arrives without the house's signature meal, so a booking built around dinner should land squarely on the Thursday-to-Saturday run. The property is fully wheelchair accessible and offers electric vehicle charging on site, useful for a Vancouver Island road trip that already includes a ferry crossing. Free parking and free WiFi cover the basics; beyond that, the house's own amenity list leans toward fishing, hiking and golf rather than a spa or pool.

We loved the arithmetic here: six suites, six private outdoor entrances, and not a corridor...
What won us over here is the order of the words: restaurant first, rooms second....
