The Hotel Saskatchewan, Autograph Collection
★★★★
Built From a Bankrupt Rival's Steel
The Hotel Saskatchewan opened in 1927 as the fourteenth of Canadian Pacific Railway's grand chain of hotels, and its origin story is stranger than most: the builders bought up the disused structural girders from the Château Qu'Appelle, a rival railway hotel abandoned after the Grand Trunk Pacific's 1919 bankruptcy, and used them to raise this one instead. The result, a neoclassical tower rather than the château style of its CPR siblings, became Regina's tallest building and stayed that way for four decades, from 1927 until 1969, a record no one in the city has forgotten.
Why It Works
We chose this hotel for a history that keeps producing usable details rather than just a plaque in the lobby: a future king slept here as Duke of Cornwall and York, the Prince of Wales visited the year it opened, and the hotel's downtown bar, Circa 27, takes its name directly from that founding year. Add four working dining venues, a proper day spa, and an Autograph Collection designation that lets the building keep its own character instead of a franchise template, and the case for staying here is about specificity, not just square footage or thread count.
Why This Location
The hotel sits on Victoria Avenue in downtown Regina, walkable to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and a short drive from Wascana Park, one of North America's largest urban parks and home to the Saskatchewan Legislative Building. Mosaic Stadium and the University of Regina are close enough for a game-day stay, and downtown's restaurants and boutiques fill the blocks immediately around the hotel, making a car unnecessary for most of a visit to the city centre.

A Hotel With Four Places to Eat
Rather than one flagship restaurant, the hotel spreads its food and drink across four distinct venues: The Burrow for an intimate dinner, The Dining Room for locally inspired breakfasts, Cafe Royale for a fast coffee and pastry, and Circa 27 for hand-crafted cocktails, local beer, and a house-made burger. It gives guests a genuine choice of register depending on the hour, rather than one dining room trying to do everything at once under a single kitchen.
Ninety-Nine Years of Regina's Biggest Nights
Long before it was an Autograph Collection property, the Hotel Saskatchewan hosted the city's grandest occasions by default, simply by being the tallest, newest building downtown when it opened. That role has softened with time, but the neoclassical lobby and the ballroom spaces still carry the scale of a building built to impress a prairie capital in the 1920s, not to blend quietly into a modern skyline it long ago stopped dominating.
Before You Book
This is a hotel for travellers who want a sense of place in a city that doesn't always get the credit; the appeal rests on history and downtown convenience rather than resort-style amenities. Families should note it isn't primarily positioned for children, and anyone visiting for a Mosaic Stadium event or a University of Regina occasion should book well ahead, since the hotel fills quickly around both, especially during Saskatchewan Roughriders season.
