The Bruce Hotel

On paper, a Hampton Inn & Suites on Benjamin Road in Waterloo looks like any other business-park hotel near any other Ontario highway interchange. What justifies its place on our list is the few kilometres surrounding it: the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market sits close by, and the historic village of St. Jacobs itself a short drive further north. The 108-room property doesn't try to compete with either destination on charm — it exists to put guests within easy reach of both, then get out of the way.
The formula here is the one Hampton built its name on: a free hot breakfast buffet, a year-round indoor pool, a fitness centre, free parking with EV charging, and meeting rooms for the business travelers who fill a meaningful share of its rooms on weekdays. None of it is designed to be memorable, and that's the point — a market trip or a day spent browsing antique shops and quilt makers doesn't need a hotel competing for attention, it needs one that runs smoothly around the edges of the day.
St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, about three kilometres north of the hotel, is Canada's largest year-round farmers' market, drawing roughly a million visitors annually to a 34,000-square-foot hall rebuilt in 2015 after a fire destroyed its predecessor. The village of St. Jacobs proper sits a further few kilometres north again, in Woolwich Township, home to the largest population of Old Order Mennonites in Canada and a historic downtown of more than 100 shops, restaurants, and artisan studios. Staying in Waterloo rather than inside the village itself trades a bit of atmosphere for easier parking, more room inventory, and a straightforward drive to both.
Price: Budget-friendly, standard Hampton rates
Vibe: Business-park practicality with Mennonite country just up the road
Rooms: 108 rooms and suites
Best For: Market-day visitors, outlet shoppers, and Waterloo Region business travel
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: How little it asks of a traveler who's spending the day at the market instead
Dining: Complimentary hot breakfast buffet; on-site snack bar
Amenities: Indoor pool, fitness centre, business centre, meeting rooms, free parking with EV charging
Attractions: St. Jacobs Farmers' Market, the historic village of St. Jacobs, outlet shopping, the Conestogo River millrace trail
The amenity list leans hard into function: free WiFi, a games room and indoor play area for families, laundry and dry-cleaning, and digital key access through the Hilton Honors app for guests who'd rather skip the front desk altogether. A handful of extras — grocery delivery, breakfast in the room, kid-friendly menus — nod to families stretching a weekend across a market visit and a night or two in the region, without pushing the hotel itself into the center of the trip.
What makes the detour worthwhile is specific, not vague “charming village” marketing. The market itself runs Thursdays and Saturdays year-round, with a third day added on Tuesdays through the summer, and its stalls cover everything from produce and cheese to furniture and livestock. Further north in the village, Home Hardware's headquarters sits alongside working studios producing pottery, quilts, and stained glass in converted mill buildings, and a two-kilometre trail follows the old millrace along the Conestogo River for anyone who wants a walk between shops. It's a rare case of a hotel's “nearby attractions” line being almost the entire reason to book it. For travelers who'd rather base themselves near the shops than the breakfast buffet, the drive between hotel and village takes well under fifteen minutes door to door, short enough to return for an afternoon swim before heading back out for dinner at one of the village's own restaurants.
