A Family Run Boutique a Short Walk From the Inner Harbour

Victoria is a small capital with the manners of a much older city, and Courtney Street is one of its quieter downtown blocks, close to the government buildings and the water without being on top of either. The Magnolia was opened here by two local families who wanted a hotel of their own rather than a franchise, and it has stayed in their hands, with a daughter of one of the founders now running it alongside the other family. That continuity shows in the way the place is looked after, which is the hardest quality for a hotel to fake.

Why It Works

We keep this one because it is the size a boutique hotel should be and still carries a full spa and a serious restaurant. Sixty four rooms is small enough for the staff to know who is staying, large enough to support seven treatment rooms and a kitchen that cooks properly. The recognitions line up behind that, from the MICHELIN Guide to a CAA Four Diamond rating, but the argument is simpler: it is independent, it is central, and nothing about it is delegated to a brand manual.

Why This Location

The Inner Harbour is a few minutes on foot, which puts the Parliament Buildings, the Royal BC Museum and the float plane terminal all within a walk. Behind the hotel, the downtown grid holds the bookshops, coffee roasters and restaurants that make Victoria worth more than a day, and Chinatown with Fan Tan Alley is a little further north. The harbour ferries leave from the docks below for Fisherman’s Wharf and the Gorge. Arriving by float plane from Vancouver and walking to the door with a bag is one of the better entrances in the country.

Sixty Four Rooms, Marble and Daylight

The rooms are conventional in the best sense: deep beds with duvets and feather pillows, marble in the bathroom, and windows that run the height of the wall so the grey island light does the decorating. Suites add sitting space and, on the upper floors, glimpses of the harbour between the rooftops. There is no attempt at a design statement, and that is deliberate. This is a hotel for people who want to sleep well, bathe properly and leave the theatrics to the scenery outside.

The Courtney Room, Cooking the Island

The restaurant takes the hotel’s street name and its ingredients from Vancouver Island, which on a good week means shellfish from the coast, game and mushrooms from the forest, and vegetables from the Saanich farms up the peninsula. It works as a dining room in the evening and a bar the rest of the time, with cocktails made to order rather than poured from a list of ten. Locals book it independently of the hotel, which is the test that matters.

Spa Magnolia on the Lobby Floor

The spa sits on the lobby level, which sounds unremarkable until you realise it means no lift, no basement and no walking through the hotel in a robe. Seven treatment rooms and a relaxation lounge give it real capacity, and the programme leans toward skincare and what the house calls smart aging, alongside the massage work. Booking ahead is sensible, particularly in the wet months when everyone staying in Victoria has the same idea at the same hour.
