Three Mineral Pools Above the Salish Sea

Oak Bay is the quiet end of Victoria, a neighbourhood of hedges, golf links and sea walls that the city treats as somewhere separate. Oak Bay Beach Hotel sits at 1175 Beach Drive on its waterfront, a manor-house silhouette of dark timber and white plaster looking straight out across the Salish Sea towards the Olympic Mountains. A hotel has stood on the site since the early twentieth century; the present building went up in its place, and ninety-five per cent of the original materials were repurposed or recycled into it. It reads as a country house that happens to be fifteen minutes from downtown.

Why It Works

The mineral pools are the reason. Three of them, heated, terraced down the lawn above the shoreline, open through the year and at their most persuasive on a wet January evening with the steam coming off the water. A sauna with a glass ceiling stands beside them for stargazing. We kept it because that single feature changes the arithmetic of a Victoria trip: the hotel becomes somewhere to stay in rather than somewhere to sleep, and the oceanfront spa, the pub and the pizza room are all built to support that.

Why This Location

Beach Drive runs along the water and the hotel takes the best stretch of it. The Victoria Golf Club, laid out in the 1890s, lies immediately south, with the sea wall path connecting the two. Oak Bay Village and the shops on Oak Bay Avenue are a short walk inland, Willows Beach and Uplands Park sit north along the same road, and downtown Victoria, the Inner Harbour and the legislature are around fifteen minutes by car. Victoria International Airport is roughly half an hour north, and the Butchart Gardens fall on the same run.

A Manor House Rebuilt From Its Own Materials

The building is a period silhouette with a modern frame inside it, and the decision to salvage rather than demolish shows in the details: beams, panelling and fittings that carry more age than a new build has any right to. Rooms are organised by what they face, from residential views through partial ocean to full ocean, which is the only classification that really counts here. The penthouse suites run beyond a thousand square feet, with a loft bedroom, two bathrooms and a full kitchen.

The Snug, FARO and Afternoon Tea

The Snug has been the neighbourhood pub since 1954 and came through the rebuild with its character intact, which is rarer than it sounds in a hotel at this level. FARO handles handcrafted pizza and a tasting room, the Boathouse Kitchen and Bar works the waterside, the lobby lounge pours afternoon tea, and in-room dining covers the rest. It is an unusual spread for a hundred rooms, and it means a three-night stay never needs a reservation somewhere else.

The Spa, and What to Know Before You Book

The Boathouse Spa is the only oceanfront spa in Victoria and draws on the same outlook the pools do. The mineral pools are reserved for guests aged sixteen and over, worth knowing before booking a family trip, and evening passes are sold to visitors, so the terraces run busier after dark than at midday. Check-in is from four in the afternoon and check-out at noon, parking is on site, and a small number of rooms take dogs, which is worth confirming when you book rather than on arrival.
